Fight H8!

As most people know Proposition 8 passed in California.  For those that aren’t aware (read: you live under a rock) Proposition 8 is a California State ballot proposition that would amend the state Constitution to restrict the definition of marriage to a union between a man and a woman. It would overturn a recent California Supreme Court decision that had recognized same-sex marriage in California as a fundamental right. The official ballot title language for Proposition 8 is “Eliminates Right of Same-Sex Couples to Marry.” The entirety of the text to be added to the constitution is: “Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.”

This vote deeply saddens me.  I do not believe that homosexuals should be treated as second class citizens - we all deserve equal rights.  I also believe that this type of discrimination is akin to the types of hate that happened against African Americans and that at some point this will be a non-issue and people will look back and say “Can you believe people were that hateful!”  How is it that two people that are in love is threatening and hurtful to anyone?

There are lots of people out there protesting about the passing of this.   There are non-violent protests this weekend in cities across the country.  Unfortunately, Jeff and I will be packing on Saturday but check out the protests in your area!

Amen, sister! I think Prop8 is disgusting and can’t believe that, at such a historical time in our country, there is still such discrimination out there! …Love makes a family… and who are we to judge love!
